Project 1: The Alula Tesfai Zeweli Primary School

Focused on trauma healing, educational, and community development.

The Need, The Shift, The Vision

    Why a Primary School?

After four years of disruption from COVID-19 and the war, thousands of children in Tigray have fallen behind in their education. A primary school will offer a safe, stable place for them to return to learning and regain a sense of normalcy. It will also serve as a hub for after-school programs centered on community development and trauma healing, allowing us to integrate our original vision into this new direction. By prioritizing a school, we are addressing both the immediate educational crisis and the community’s long-term recovery.

Originally, our plan was to build a trauma-healing community center, as requested by local leaders and residents. However, conditions on the ground have changed. Nearby schools are now housing internally displaced people (IDPs), creating classrooms with more than 100 students per teacher. Many schools were also destroyed during the war, leaving families without safe or accessible learning spaces. In response, the Embasenayti administrators and the Tigray Education Bureau asked us to prioritize building a primary school. Because our mission is to listen and respond to the community, we adapted our plans to meet their most urgent needs.

    3 Goals

From Community center to Primary school

    3 Goals

    1. Trauma Healing: Create a dedicated space that supports students’ emotional recovery through counseling, a clinic, and calm, restorative environments.

    2. Educational Development: Provide high-quality, consistent education through fully equipped classrooms, labs, arts spaces, and study areas to help children catch up and thrive.

    3. Communi

    3. Community Development: Strengthen Nebelet and surrounding communities by offering skills training, creating jobs, and building a sustainable local economy centered around education.

Construction Has Begun: Building in Progress

Construction is officially underway in Nebelet. Excavation and site leveling are complete, the foundation is being laid, and both the water line and electricity have now been installed. Each milestone brings us closer to opening the primary school the community urgently needs.
